Written against the background of the rise of Nazism, War With the Newts concerns the discovery in the South Pacific of a sea-dwelling race, which is enslaved and exploited by mankind. In time they rebel, laying siege to the strongholds of their former masters in a global war for supremacy. R.U.R., or Rossum's Universal Robots, seen by many as a modern interpretation of the 'golem' myth, is regarded as the most important play in the history of SF. It introduced the word 'robot' and gave the genre one of its most enduring tropes.

Après des études à Hradec Kralové, Brno, Berlin et Paris, Karel Capek (1890-1938) obtient son doctorat de philosophie à Prague en 1915. Auteur et metteur en scène pour le théâtre municipal de Prague-Vinohrady, Capek compose ses premiers recueils de récits avec son frère Josef. En 1920, il écrit R.U.R , - Rossum's Universal Robots. C'est dans ce titre que le monde voit pour la première fois apparaître le mot robot (« travailleur » en tchèque). En 1922, c'est La fabrique d'absolu, qui annonce presque simultanément avec H.G. Wells - qui signait, quelques années plus tôt : La destruction libératrice - l'invention de l'énergie atomique. Son oeuvre brillante et plurielle, souvent fantaisiste, mêle la finesse philosophique au bon sens populaire, le sérieux à l'humour, l'humanisme au catastrophisme. Sa maîtrise narrative, son humour, son érudition, sa fine connaissance des hommes et de ses profondeurs troubles le rapprochent notamment de Chesterton.
